One of the most notorious airship
captains and one of the most successful ships during the early days
of World War 1.
First of all to clear up something you might have
noticed and wondered about- Why are some Zeppelins L, and some LZ or
SL? Well, for the German navy, they would order a ship from the
zeppelin company and would call it Luftschiff followed by what ever
number ship it was they ordered.
The Zeppelin company kept a running
tally on the ships they built and would designate them as Luftschiff
Zeppelin followed by the chronological number it was built in. so for
instance, L-13 was the 13th ship ordered by the navy, but
the 45th ship built by the Zeppelin company, LZ-45.
SL? Well, that stood for Schutte-Lanz
who also built rigid airships for Germany, but we'll get in to that
later...
And I'll keep these posts to a
reasonable size, so look for the continuation soon!
